Say It With Science: Vedic Multiplication →
sayitwithscience:
(Technically called Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah) This is a quick and simple way to multiply any two numbers. It’s easiest when the numbers are both close to a power of ten, but it will always work.
The first step is to chose a power of ten that the numbers are closest to. In my example I…

You Know You're a Math Nerd When Part 2
chictogeek:
You carry around a mechanical pencil and an eraser with you just in case you need to do math suddenly.
You get really excited learning new ways to do long division or any other type of math trick.
You get into debates about which way is better to learn/teach math.
You laugh at math jokes REALLY heartily.
(All things that happened to me today.)
All very very true. I know. I...

Columbia Engineers Prove Graphene is the Strongest... →
Research scientists at Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science have achieved a breakthrough by proving that the carbon material graphene is the strongest material ever measured.
Graphene holds great promise for the development of nano-scale devices and equipment. It consists of a single layer of graphite atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, similar to a...

ScienceWorld by Wolfram Research: An amazing... →
This is an awesome site to help everyone out there like me. Whether you like to just randomly learn more and more about mathematics, like me, or need to struggle through high school geometry, this site helps!
It has an easy-to-navigate interface that will let you quickly find the topic or theory you need and research it more in depth.
Hope it helps!!!

Virtual atom smasher in LHC@Home 2.0 →
darkuncle:
remember folding@home? SETI@home? distributed.net? (I had a few dozen machines working on a 3des contest there at one point long ago.) If you liked that stuff, chances are you’d also like having your computers’ idle cycles put to work searching through LHC data to support physics experiments like the CMS and ATLAS, and maybe even contributing to the search for the Higgs Boson.

Kaprekar’s Constant
1. Take any 4 digit number, except, 1111, 2222, …, 9999. Leading zeros are allowed.
2. Arrange the digits in increasing, and then in decreasing order to get 2 four-digit numbers, adding leading zeros if necessary.
3. Subtract the smaller number from the bigger number.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3
IN AT MOST 7 ITERATIONS, THE ABOVE PROCESS WILL ALWAYS PRODUCE...

I love finding out there’s a theory for thoughts I’ve been trying to articulate.
“In physics and cosmology, the anthropic principle is the philosophical argument that observations of the physical Universe must be compatible with the conscious life that observes it. Some proponents of the argument reason that it explains why the Universe has the age and the fundamental physical...

New Particle, If Proved, Could Be A 'Huge... →
lookhigh:
Scientists at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois said this week a “bump” in their data may be evidence of a new subatomic particle — one that could change our understanding of modern physics…. [The] particle may be evidence of a new force of nature, one that operates in only the shortest of distances between subatomic particles in individual atoms. For...
